The government’s nutrient-based standards for school lunches became law for secondary schools in September 2009. The standards were developed following research into increased incidences of youth obesity and general concerns that young people are not making healthy food choices.
The standards aim to make the food we provide healthier by:
- increasing the mineral and vitamin content
- reducing the fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt content
It is important that school lunches contain sufficient energy and nutrients to promote good nutritional health as a poor diet affects not only health but school attendance, self confidence and academic performance.
HC3S work closely with the County Dietician, food suppliers and school management to achieve the standards. Our ‘Meal Deals’ are carefully designed to be low in fat, salt and sugar and high in fibre, vitamins and nutrients.
We use local suppliers wherever possible with approximately one third of our fruit, vegetables and salad items being locally produced. We actively support the Hampshire Fare local produce programme and our menus include a wide range of products from local suppliers.
HC3S also work with the Hyperactive Children’s Support Group and have removed almost 70 additives regarded as contributory to disruptive behaviour.
As school caterers, we at HC3S, strongly believe that we have a responsibility to promote and encourage healthy eating amongst young
people, by ensuring that the food and drink we provide throughout the school day reflect the messages of healthy eating taught in schools.
