Frogmore Community College became a Specialist Technology College in September 2004. Specialism has been a key catalyst for change, improvement and driving development through the College. It has put the focus firmly on learning and raising student achievement.
Clearly, Specialist Status has brought more resourcing, the additional funding enabled the College to enrich the curriculum and develop resources in all subject areas. Initially a new Food and Textile suite was created, Resistant Materials and Graphics were re-furbished and our ICT facilities were totally upgraded. This initiative is still on-going during 2012 we have upgraded our IT systems network and installed wireless connectivity across the College site. However, the underpinning purpose of the specialist schools initiative is that of raising standards.
As far as Technology status is concerned, Science, Mathematics and Design and Technology are the lead subjects but excellent practice is extended to all subject areas.
Designation as a Specialist School was initially for a four year period but re-designation is now linked to an Ofsted inspection.
Specialist status has seen improved links with our partner primary schools. Students from Year 8, under the direction of our Advanced Skills Teacher for Science, work with children from Years 5 and 6 throughout the year. Our feeder schools are able to spend time with us, taking part in Mathematics master classes and our now well-established Technology Days which provide junior school pupils with a unique opportunity to experience aspects of Technology not possible at their own schools. The College also engage our partner primary schools in an English Most Able project, work with Modern Foreign Languages, Art projects and drama workshops.
One of our targets was that of gaining prominence through participation in national competitions. For the last few years we have entered the BAE Systems competition and won the team award.
The significant improvement seen in our examination results, along with some of our groundbreaking initiatives have been recognised by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) and we have recently been asked to lead several key SSAT events to share our excellent practice.
The impact of Specialist Status has been positive and far reaching and continues to be so.
